·        Inter-Collegiate Physics Meet on 23.07.2016 at Maris Stella College
The Department of Physics, Maris Stella College, Vijayawada has organized an inter-collegiate Physics Meet on 23.07.2016. Students from St.Theresa Women College, Eluru, JMJ College, Tenali, Post Graduate and under graduate Physics students of Andhra Loyola College, P.B.Siddhartha College of Arts and Science and Nalanda Degree College and B.Sc MPC and MPCS students of maris Stella college had participated in this event.
Dr. B.S. Murty, Professor & Head, Dept. of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, who  was the old student of Government Polytechnic, Vijayawada was the resource person of the event. He is the recipient of Shanti SwarupBhatnagar Award, a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Indian Institute of Metals, Asia Pacific Academy of Materials, ASM International and AP Academy of Sciences and so many other reputations and awards.  He delivered a talk “The Excitement of probing advanced materials at the atomic scale”. Probing atomic materials with microscopes is parallel to astronomy that explores the unseen world of 'inner space' inside the atom and it is incredible that single atoms can be detected and visualised using amazing scientific instrumentation available today. The structure of matter at atomic scale can tell a lot about its performance in the real world which in turn can be used to develop new advanced, stronger and lighter engineered materials with desirable properties that require less energy to produce such as high-wear alloys for longer-lasting parts at reasonable costs, high-temperature materials that will enable the next generation of renewable energy technologies, thin-strip steels that require significantly less energy to produce, and exceptionally strong alloys with nanometre-sized grains. The successful manufacture of such materials will provide significant environmental as well as economic benefits, and they will have high-performance applications in a range of industries including aerospace, transport, construction, manufacturing, sports products, food and chemical processing, as well as in microelectromechanical and biomedical systems.
UG and PG students of various colleges actively participated in various contests:
       i)       Debate on “Mobile Use: a distraction or development”
ii)       Essay writing competition on “The Energy Future”
iii)        Just a minute talk on physics related topics and
iv)        Dumb charade in which students had to explain physics terms through actions so            that the team members could identify the word.

The campus was filled with vibrant energy and students actively participated and shared their creative ideas. The deliberations of the inter-collegiate seminar enlightened the students’ community and motivate them towards research. The various contests provided a channel to pour out their talents and the experience would  refresh the young minds.
Degree Vice-Principal Rev.Sr.Innasya, The Head of Physics dept. Mrs. A. Kasturi and senior faculty member of Physics department and Inter-Vice Principal Mrs.M.Triveni and other faculty members of the department were present.

Science and Technology of Nano materials & fundamentals to applications
The Science and Technology of nonmaterials has created great excitement and expectations in the last few years. It is an interdisciplinary area of research that has been growing explosively worldwide. Nano materials have the potential for revolutionizing the ways of modern living and play an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. The development and application of nano materials has a significant effect on chemical, energy, medicine, healthcare, drug and gene delivery, electronics, communications technology, space industries and our security. Such advanced materials manufacturing and innovation involved in the development is targeted for wealth and health creation and commercial success. Rigorous effort is needed to effect rapid technology transfer from research centres into practical application. While the materials and technologies are available, the main barrier is a lack of awareness among the young learners about nano materials and understanding of the properties and applications of nano materials and smart technologies. Such awareness can be created through workshops or development of networks among educational institutions so that students get plenty of choices for their higher learning and right carrier choice. Therefore, the science and technology of nanomaterials is of immense academic interest. In view of this, The department of physics has organized one day workshop on the topic “The Science and Technology of Nanomaterials & fundamentals to Applications” for its B.Sc Physics students on 23.11.2016. D. Dibakar Das, PhD, Associate Professor, School of Engineering Sciences and Technology (SEST), University of Hyderabad, Gachibowli, Hyderabad-500046,was the resource person.
Dr Das explained the fundamentals of science and technology of nanomaterials, the progress in the synthesis, Assembly and fabrication of nanomaterials, and the fundamentals about potential applications of these materials in future smart technologies. He also demonstrated the synthesis of some nano particles by sol-gel method, co-precipitation method and by auto combustion method to students in the chemistry lab. This one day workshop has given hands on experience to students and enlightened them with the knowledge of latest trends in science and technologies. Students who take up research in such significant area of studies will have brighter job opportunities in the near future.
